I usually write about surgery and scientific information concerning lymphedema but, today is a little different! I've experienced something the last few days which I feel compelled to share.
What does lymphedema do to your limbs? This is a question I get asked quite often. But only two people have ever asked me ... What does lymphedema do to your mind? How does it feel inside your head?
This is a pretty tough question. I find it hard to organise my feelings about lymphedema; it's even harder to say them out loud.
I'm not going to delve too deeply into how I feel about my lymphedema. But I will talk about the cycles of highs and lows. Every day that I see a reduction in swelling I am so elated because I know that my lymph node transfer is working it's magic! However, I still get bad days! And they still hit me hard! The body swells for so many different reasons, even a body who's lymphatic system isn't compromised. Fighting infections, hormonal changes, temperature and stress are all factors which increase my swelling. I haven't posted over the last few days because I've been struggling with swelling; I don't want to be so hypocritical as to post about positivity if I don't feel positive myself. However, today I feel great, my swelling has really reduced and my ankle bone is just about visible (I've not seen it for about 6 months!).
So, my take home message for today... Lymphedema is hard! There will always be days when you experience extra swelling due to environmental factors, but don't worry you'll come out the other side feeling positive and on top of you're condition. Since my surgery, I've had plenty more "good days" than bad. Please have a look at Dr Becker's website to see whether you may be eligible for corrective lymphedema surgery (link below).
